Come see the culmination of Lim Charlotte’s enquiry into the depths of innocence versus experiences within the confines of the city state, as a subject and object, self and other. Fusing the various dichotomies and contradictions of the examined life, Lim Charlotte pits it against that which makes little sense unless the gaze is averted.
Systems of measurements speak to larger concepts of time. The linear boundaries of our physical relationship and existence with and in time, reduces lives to a singular digit. It is a stark parallel to technology in modernity. Despite the rise of digital social mobility, the various classes of ‘society’ attain access to varying degrees of exposure according to their social status. Exposures which do not necessarily intersect apart from the superficial. Who controls the distribution of information? The notion of self is enslaved by knowledge to maintain and perpetuate power and financial imbalance in the socio-political landscape. Semantics have become a tool for ostracisation, discrediting the voices and narratives of the non-elites, the ‘outsiders’.
Singapore-based, multimedia visual artist, Lim Charlotte has exhibited at UltraSuperNew Gallery (Singapore), Gajah Gallery, Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS), Aliwal Arts Centre, Kult Gallery and Goodman Arts Centre and was awarded the 30 Art Friends Scholarship in 2015.
